  1. No one can dispute that Edith Head had talent as a designer, but her talent as a self-promoter far exceeded that. In the realm of Hollywood costume design, she may have racked up many Oscars, but aesthetically, was her work any better than that of her mentor at Paramount, Travis Banton, or contemporaries such as Adrian, Orry-Kelly or Irene? Probably not. Yet Edith Head is far more known today than those four, who are essentially remembered solely by fans of classic Hollywood who go beyond “casual” — and that’s not a reference to a style of dress.
